Overdose Lifeline – David Plew, President of Concargo Transportation was introduced to Overdose Lifeline in the summer of 2014 when David & Susan lost their youngest son, Leland, to an opioid overdose.  Leland was working for Concargo as a logistics specialist and had been sober for 7 months until he relapsed and passed away.  Overdose Lifeline provides group grief counseling, educational programs, harm reduction services (Narcan Kits and Fentanyl test strips), and weekend camps for youth affected by substance use disorder.  Two of Leland’s friends, Taylor Kennell and Eric Roach, approached David about having a golf outing in Leland’s memory to raise money for charity.  David introduced them to the founder of Overdose Lifeline, Justin Phillips.  Justin liked the idea and agreed to have ODL be the benefactor of the funds raised.  David agreed to be a co-chair of the golf outing and the 1st Annual golf outing was held in September 2015 and raised $6,700 for ODL’s charitable activities.  The 8th annual outing is June 16th at Dye’s Walk CC in Greenwood, IN.  So far, the event has raised over $200,000 for Overdose Lifeline.

Concargo Transportation has been a sponsor since the 1st event and will be a Gold Sponsor this year.  David and his family plan to continue to be volunteers for this event.  The opioid epidemic took a turn for the worse during the Covid lockdowns and isolation, with an increase in overdoses and deaths.  In the last year, fentanyl has been the leading cause of opioid overdoses. Over 81,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in the 12 months ending in May 2020, the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded in a 12-month period, according to the CDC. The work Overdose Lifeline does is more important now than ever before.  David said “The volunteer work we do is therapeutic and helps preserve the memories of our son Leland and all the other lives lost to substance use disorder.”
